Next month, three AWG coaches will be flying to Calgary to attend Hockey Canada's Female Program of Excellence.  Cynthia White (HNWT); Steve Paterson and Shauna Beaton (HNU) will be joining other coaches from around the country to work with the National Women's Program.  Topics will cover:

  • Offensive & Defensive Skills Physical Literacy (small space games and total athlete development) On & Off Ice
  • Staff Management + Personal Development
  • Skills/Skating Development (On-Ice & Off Ice)
  • Goalie Development (On-Ice & Off Ice)
  • Fitness & Nutrition for Elite Athletes
  • Video Usage

These three coaches will bring back valuable training for our future athletes!  Congratulations on your selection.

This past May/June saw more training opportunities for our HN clinicians.  Greg Hopf (HNWT) attended further training in Toronto for Hockey Canada's Specialty Clinics which will give coaches further development opportunities.  The focus this time was Developing Defencemen and Skating.
Steve Faulkner (HNU) recently attended Hockey Canada training in Toronto for Goaltending Instruction.  He had the opportunity to work along side Canada's best in U17/U18/U20's when is comes to goaltenders.  Lacing up his skates with Erik Comrie and Zach Fucale as well as talking with NHL coaches, former players and HC's best instructors were many of the highlights.  HNU will be lucky to have Steve work with their goalies next season.
Last year, HN sent Tony Stapleton from HNWT.

Welcome Paul Murphy - Sports Honour Roll

The Canadian Forces Sports Honour Roll was created in 1988 to honour athletes, coaches and officials who have made a significant contribution to the CF sports program throughout their military careers.

This year, retired Warrant Officer Paul Murphy of the Royal Canadian Air Force was inducted to the honour roll for his work in hockey under the category of “Coach and Builder” His citation reads:

Over the past 30 years, WO Murphy has coached thousands of athletes, trained and mentored his fellow coaches and has dedicated his time to league and tournament administration. He has played an integral role in developing women’s hockey both for military and civilian athletes. From 2006-2012, Warrant Officer Murphy kept such a hectic schedule that he coached more skills clinics than any other coach in Canada.

Paul is also the latest addition to our Hockey North Instructor staff and we are lucky to have him!
